The story of a mother's journey to save her son, Alok’s life from a deadly disease called cirrhosis of the liver. This is a journey of struggle, determination, and the power of medical expertise and human kindness.
From Alok’s Mom,
Watching a child suffer is the hardest thing for any mother. I was feeling like I am carrying the weight of the world on my shoulder. I felt hopeless and powerless to help your child conquer the problem. My son, Alok was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. I was unfamiliar with this condition or even heard of this disease. But I knew it was a serious condition when I saw how weak he had become.
Bright and energetic, Alok loved spending time with friends and attending school. Everything, however, morphed when a disease overtook him. He was severely underweight, and his limbs and eyes were swollen that he was unable to move. Watching him endure such suffering was heartbreaking. We took him to multiple hospitals, but no one seemed to be able to help him. Then, we met Dr. Nagendra Kumar V. R. and Dr. Rajiv Lochan from Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, and things started to look up for Alok.
Dr. Lochan says, "I remember when Alok first came to me, he was just a boy, barely in his teenage years. His life got turned upside down when he was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, along with a lot of fluid accumulation in his abdomen. He had Wilson's disease, and his liver was shrunken and damaged beyond repair." The doctor also arranged for us to meet with his team of doctors, who explained the procedure to us in detail.
Our financial struggle made it hard to carry forward the treatment. We were a poor family from Belgaum and we couldn't afford the expenses of the transplant. But fortunately, the doctors informed us that the Manipal Hospital had several ways to raise funds for the surgery. They had tie-ups with companies for social responsibility, and they also raised funds through online programs.
The next challenge was finding a suitable donor for my son. The doctor explained to us that we needed a living donor, as Alok's condition was too critical to wait for a deceased donor. We were relieved when I was deemed a suitable donor. It meant that we could move forward with the transplant without delay. The surgery itself was a success, thanks to the skilled hands of Dr. Lochan and his team. I was amazed at how quickly I recovered from the robotic donor hepatectomy.
Within days, I was up and about, caring for Alok as he recovered from his surgery. It was a difficult road to recovery, but we made it through. Alok's liver functions started to pick up, and he was able to return to school after just a few weeks. It was like watching a miracle unfold before our eyes.
Alok is now recovering and also follows checkups with the doctor regularly. He is doing quite well and hasn't had any complications since the transplant. I am grateful to the entire team at Manipal for their excellent care and support throughout Alok's treatment. It's an absolute pleasure to see Alok and I recover so nicely and quickly after such a devastating disease.
If there is one thing that I have learned from this experience, it is that hope can come from the most unexpected places. When we were at our lowest point, we found hope in the form of a dedicated team of doctors and the kindness of strangers. And that is something I will always hold close to my heart.

When you want to change your life, know that there’s help. Here’s the story of how Zubair Ullah Sharif overcame a myriad of health problems when he decided not to let his weight define his life anymore.
Before surgery, my weight was around 134 kg. I’m an engineer by profession, and by age 51, I was facing several health issues like high BP and sleep apnea. It would be difficult for me even to walk or climb the stairs.
The high BP started long back in 2008 and was around 140/100. Despite taking regular medicine, it didn’t seem to come down, and my BP stayed constant.
At 134 kg, none of my clothes would fit, and all my jacket sizes were 4XL. I could never wear ready-made garments. My sleep apnea problem was so bad that I would fall asleep if I put my head down for two minutes. This was embarrassing at times, and for the same reason, I even went to the Friday prayers at the masjid after everyone else. My snoring was so bad that people would know from the road if I was sleeping in my room.
I was tired and obviously not doing well when one day, my friend suggested that I get surgery. He had gotten bariatric surgery himself and had lost a lot of weight. He told me how well he was doing. But you know the Indian mentality — I said, “No, boss, surgery is not possible for me!” Like everyone else, I was scared.
Surgery meant going under the knife, and I was not prepared for it.
In India, there are many alternatives to weight loss surgery, and I tried them all. I went to a couple of slimming centers, followed dietitian plans, took powders and medicines for weight loss, and whatnot!
Even though nobody forced me to, I wanted to change for myself. But nothing happened. I soon realized that it was all in vain and that I had only been wasting my time and money. My snoring and BP problems were still the same.
Soon after, through my friend, I met Dr. Moinoddin G, Bariatric & Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Consultant from Manipal Hospital Millers Road. It was this conversation I had with him that convinced me about the surgery for the very first time. By this time, I was also tired of all the other alternatives, so I just decided to go for it.
Alhamdulillah, after the surgery, I am totally fine! My snoring problem is gone, my BP is normal, and I no longer use a sleep apnea machine. Sleeping with a sleep apnea machine was uncomfortable and embarrassing, to say the least. Now I can sleep peacefully and even walk five to six kilometers easily.
I had to follow a strict diet for the first three months after the surgery. But now, I can eat just what everyone else is eating.
I wish, with all my heart, that no one goes through what I did. I want to tell people about the wonders of this surgery so that people don’t waste their time, money, and energy as I did. Now, whenever I come across an obese person on the road, I stop, introduce myself and explain to them what the surgery is and what it did for me. I tell them, “Boss, life is very short. Enjoy whatever time God has given you by staying hail and healthy.”
I am 78 kg now. I urge everyone suffering to book an appointment with Dr. Moinoddin and have their lives transformed like mine. You’ll be thankful to God and me!
Zubair Ullah Sharif
