The story of a mother's journey to save her son, Alok’s life from a deadly disease called cirrhosis of the liver. This is a journey of struggle, determination, and the power of medical expertise and human kindness.
From Alok’s Mom,
Watching a child suffer is the hardest thing for any mother. I was feeling like I am carrying the weight of the world on my shoulder. I felt hopeless and powerless to help your child conquer the problem. My son, Alok was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. I was unfamiliar with this condition or even heard of this disease. But I knew it was a serious condition when I saw how weak he had become.
Bright and energetic, Alok loved spending time with friends and attending school. Everything, however, morphed when a disease overtook him. He was severely underweight, and his limbs and eyes were swollen that he was unable to move. Watching him endure such suffering was heartbreaking. We took him to multiple hospitals, but no one seemed to be able to help him. Then, we met Dr. Nagendra Kumar V. R. and Dr. Rajiv Lochan from Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, and things started to look up for Alok.
Dr. Lochan says, "I remember when Alok first came to me, he was just a boy, barely in his teenage years. His life got turned upside down when he was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, along with a lot of fluid accumulation in his abdomen. He had Wilson's disease, and his liver was shrunken and damaged beyond repair." The doctor also arranged for us to meet with his team of doctors, who explained the procedure to us in detail.
Our financial struggle made it hard to carry forward the treatment. We were a poor family from Belgaum and we couldn't afford the expenses of the transplant. But fortunately, the doctors informed us that the Manipal Hospital had several ways to raise funds for the surgery. They had tie-ups with companies for social responsibility, and they also raised funds through online programs.
The next challenge was finding a suitable donor for my son. The doctor explained to us that we needed a living donor, as Alok's condition was too critical to wait for a deceased donor. We were relieved when I was deemed a suitable donor. It meant that we could move forward with the transplant without delay. The surgery itself was a success, thanks to the skilled hands of Dr. Lochan and his team. I was amazed at how quickly I recovered from the robotic donor hepatectomy.
Within days, I was up and about, caring for Alok as he recovered from his surgery. It was a difficult road to recovery, but we made it through. Alok's liver functions started to pick up, and he was able to return to school after just a few weeks. It was like watching a miracle unfold before our eyes.
Alok is now recovering and also follows checkups with the doctor regularly. He is doing quite well and hasn't had any complications since the transplant. I am grateful to the entire team at Manipal for their excellent care and support throughout Alok's treatment. It's an absolute pleasure to see Alok and I recover so nicely and quickly after such a devastating disease.
If there is one thing that I have learned from this experience, it is that hope can come from the most unexpected places. When we were at our lowest point, we found hope in the form of a dedicated team of doctors and the kindness of strangers. And that is something I will always hold close to my heart.
